Susie Light earned her Bachelor of Science in Human Services from Old Dominion University in 2004 and her Master of Education in Counseling and Guidance from Lincoln Memorial University in 2007. She became a Certified Substance Abuse Counselor in 2006 and, in 2025, became a Resident in Counseling through the Virginia Department of Health Professions.
With more than 20 years of experience in behavioral health and human services, Susie has dedicated her career to supporting individuals and families facing mental health and substance use challenges. She began her career with Frontier Health in 2004, providing substance use and mental health services in outpatient settings.
In 2007, Susie joined the Department of Social Services, where she served in a variety of roles, including Child Protective Services (CPS) Investigator, working collaboratively with Foster Care and Adult Services. Her leadership abilities led to several supervisory positions, including CPS Supervisor, Assistant Director, and Director, where she oversaw programs and staff while advocating for vulnerable children, adults, and families.
Since 2017, Susie has served at Wallens Ridge State Prison, where she currently holds the position of Senior Mental Health Clinician. In addition to her correctional mental health work, she provided inpatient behavioral health services to both adults and adolescents at Creekside Behavioral Health from March 2025 through May 2026, further expanding her clinical experience across diverse treatment settings.
Throughout her career, Susie has worked in both inpatient and outpatient environments, providing individual counseling, group therapy, crisis intervention, and comprehensive behavioral health services. Her clinical expertise includes treating individuals with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders, utilizing a compassionate, evidence-based approach to help clients achieve lasting recovery and improved well-being.
Outside of her professional life, Susie enjoys spending quality time with her family, especially her grandbaby. She also enjoys gardening, vintage shopping, reading, kayaking, and finding meaningful ways to serve and support others in her community.
